Sports injuries and pain
The initial focus of physiotherapy is to assess and accurately diagnose the injury, as well as identifying the underlying cause.
Following this, we will work with you to develop a program to aid recovery and to prevent recurrence.
Injuries are often due to overloading structures such as tendons or muscles that can’t quite cope with what we ask them to do. For example running further or faster than normal can cause a tendon strain, or gardening for a full day at the start of spring may cause shoulder pain.
By progressively increasing our flexibility and strength, we can heal injuries and help prevent recurrence.
Other treatments may be offered to complement this, such as acupuncture, joint mobilisation, soft tissue massage or kinesiology taping.
Gait Analysis
Gait analysis can be valuable in diagnosing an underlying cause of a sports injury. You can just ask someone to take some videos of yourself running (we can provide guidance, and can be on a treadmill, track or where you usually run) and then send them over. We will then analyse them and incorporate any findings into your rehab program and give you ideas to improve your running style.
Chronic pain
Ongoing pain can be very distressing and may limit what we feel able to do. It can affect sleep, our work and even our mental health.
It can be difficult to understand why it persists, especially if we are told that there’s nothing to worry about or that there is no cure.
Pain can lead us to give up hobbies, work or sport, and can stop us doing things we enjoy, such as playing with our children or grandchildren, because of fear of causing damage or making pain worse.
This can become a downward spiral – lack of activity can cause more stiffness, loss of mobility and low mood, which in turn may increase pain.
Research into this area has developed rapidly over the past twenty years. A graded gentle exercise program, alongside relaxation, lifestyle advice and helping people understand the complex nature of persistent pain has been shown to be the most effective way to reduce pain and improve quality of life.
Physiotherapy can benefit by helping you to understand pain, taking away the fear and helping you to gradually return to the things you enjoy. We can help you address issues such as sleep, relaxation and daily activity and gradually you will notice that you are able to do more with less pain.
